This is the most powerful image in my little thrift shop collection of abandoned images. I remember snatching it so fast from a stack of images in a Kansas City flea market booth that I nearly ripped it.
Sometimes I like to convince myself the hunched man on the left with the camera or binoculars on his arm is Dwight Eisenhower...Or Bob Hope.
I'm not sure why.

I found this little wallet at the flea market this weekend. It feels as though, with one more opening, it will disintegrate. Of course couldn't control myself and snatched it up. There are a few more photos behind these ones, but I can't get myself to pull them out yet....if ever.

Clearly, now that I've moved I really need access to a better scanner.

The Marvelous Museum exhibition was what it said it was, MARVELOUS. As an exhibition put together on the basis of digging into the depths of the museum's collection, the works shown encompassed every era and every department/collection. There were art works, historical remnants and scientific objects. It was a total spectacle....And I ate it up.

Home movie safari films?? This was a girl having tea with an elephant...naturally.

This was an installation in which you could draw your own portrait via a touchscreen, and then wait to see it presented on a wall of eclectic portraits from various time periods and mediums. YAY technology..

My favorite installation was this statue next to a stuffed giraffe in a wood and plastic crate, which had peek holes sliced into the plastic wrapping....in the best of places.

This exhibition made me feel really excited...like 8 year old excited. And it seemed to have this effect on a lot of people. Every where people were snickering, grinning, tilting their heads, and scrambling around the next corner and into the following nook.

I started school this last week, well we had orientation...that lasted 2 days.

This mostly resulted in a battle between public transit and me, which in turn resulted in me being late to meet most of my department and chair. So, so, so, frustrating and embarrassing. It also means I feel a little bit like I'm cheating on you KC, with another artist community.

We also gave Oakland's first fridays a try. There were fewer galleries than Kansas City, but a larger crowd, and a lot more street stands with t-shirts, food, and jewelry etc. The stuff inside was hit or miss...That is until we saw this dance troop dancing on the side of this building....

The best show was one at the Chandra Cerrito Contemporary featuring, Lawrence LaBianca and Esther Traugot. Both had various sculptures and installations that were beautiful. These were the first we saw and I was really impressed. Unfortunately the rest of the shows didn't always follow their pace..

My father grew up on the family's farm in rural Kansas. When he was in high school they sold the house and land and moved into town. When I was a kid, some 25 years later, we would often go on drives with my grandparents and always, somehow, ended up there. At that point, it had been abandoned for years. Most of the land sat unattended and the house became dilapidated. The new owner attempted many times during my teen years to burn it down in order to claim insurance money. However, when you are located on top of a hill in the middle of the prairie, just a few miles outside a small town of only 400 some people, fires are detected fast.

In 2010 he succeeded. These are what's left.

In my early teens, the property inspired me to pick up my first real camera. For years, through jr high, high school, my first art classes, and later my entire art school degree, I continued to document our occasional outings there.

Shortly after the fire in 2010, my grandmother, father and I returned to the farm on the hill. The walk, the people, and the stories were the same. The land was not. The embers still smoldered.

I scooped remnants of the land, house, and in result, its history into a bucket, took it home, and dispersed it into my grandmothers canning jars. These artifacts were then displayed across every Kansas City Art Institute mantel, an odd homely detail of the school which references the campus' past as prominent homes in a much younger Kansas City. The final pieces became like shrines. Reminders of time and transformation, the jars and their contents referenced both the land the jars held within and the land on which they were displayed, the midwest.

I bought this image last fall....As in Fall 2008. I thought it would be an interesting candidate for some of the cut out images I had been working on. However, I hadn't gotten the image back out since I bought it. That is until today...over a year later.

This spring, I was accepted into CCA's MA for curatorial practices. Since then I've been trying to make various decisions--weather or not I can actually accept due to the lack of funding offers, where I would live, etc. When looking for a place to live, I had been considering living across the bay from San Francisco in an area called Alameda for the cheaper rent and small town feel. If I were to live there, I had thought, ideally, I could ride a ferry from there to San Fran for school everyday. This ferry is the same exact ferry line as the one in the image.

Coincidence?
Sometimes I think paying attention to these kinds of coincidences is important...

Just some cyanotype rif-raf from 2009 that I would love to return to if I could just find the time!

This was a test I did for a quilt. The goal was to print this image of my grandmother and her brother on an old quilt. I got as far as the final print and then found it ruined by a bad batch of chemicals. Rats.

So, I buy a lot of stuff at thrift stores....Some might consider it a problem....or an addiction even.

Over the past year, I've purchased a lot of stuff, including a lot of photographs. Many of which, I don't necessarily plan to include in my artwork but instead hang on my walls, store away for later, or use for inspiration. Anyway, while doing some organizing today, I realized they were worth posting.
They are indeed a quite nice little collection of characters....

I purchased a packet of negatives and slides in my favorite little booth at the River Market Flea. The packet is labeled Gordon Betty (insert an island name I can't recall at the moment) Greenland. Inside is a very strange assortment of images depicting who I assume is Mr. Betty, a few of his friends, and his travels. I'd like to make various sized prints and make an installation out of them. That is, if I can ever find the time in between thesis and have the money after printing my senior show.

Also--

Often when I'm making my work, I wonder--Is it enough? Do I have a strong enough hand in these works? The answer? Everyday my opinion shifts. I pretty much always feel it is enough in that I think I have the right to call these images, in some sense, my own. I think if someone else were doing these things, I would be completely fine with it. But for some reason, on some days, I'm pretty uncomfortable with myself appropriating in such a way. Most of the time I think of it as more of a collaboration with the original owners, time, and myself---because most often, these objects have shifted in ways probably not necessarily wanted by the original owner. You know, wear and tear, dust, degradation, other peoples marks, etc. Let alone the fact that their personal images have ended up in thrift stores to be purchased by weirdos like me....How awkward is that? How does that even happen? At what point does someone die and while sifting through their belongings someone says...'Let's sell Uncle Mike's photo albums instead of keeping them'....

Anyway....Gordon and I are getting to know each other, and he's a pretty interesting guy...
